Killarney manafacturing company to cease production

Killarney based Sarah Lee has announced it`s to close with the loss of 92 jobs. The company which manufactures underwear will cease production between February and March. Vice President of product sourcing Daniel Marie says the current market environment leaves the company with significant over capacity. He says the job losses in no way reflect the loyalty and commitment of staff. This is the second attempt by Sarah lee to set up in Killarney. In 1967 the company opened its doors under the guise of Pretty Polly, and at its height employed 1,000 people. Production ceased in 1995, with the loss of 150 jobs. But in November 1999 pretty Polly`s parent company Sarah lee announced it was to set up at the Killarney site. The company was to create 300 jobs. But by November 2001 Sarah lee had begun scaling back its workforce, 84 people were laid off. In June of the following year a restructuring of operations was announced and the workforce halved. The company is now committing to putting a support programme in place for staff.
