Killarney hits back at criticism from US newspaper

Main Street, KillarneyThe inclusion of Killarney in a list of the top ten ‘tourist traps’ in Europe, has been described as a ‘cheap publicity stunt’ by a spokesman for the town’s hoteliers. Writer Rik Steeves, regarded as one of the most influential travel writers in the US, slated the Kerry town in a recent article in the newspaper ‘USA Today’. He describes it as being plagued by traffic jams, and over-run with coach tours and plastic souvenir shops. Mr Steeves also includes Killarney in a compilation of the top ten tourist traps in Europe, that are best avoided by American visitors. However, PRO of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, Michael Rosney, says the article is both unfair and inaccurate in places. He also says, that tourists are entitled to buy whatever souvenirs they want: [audio_player src=”http://media.radiokerry.ie/mediamanager/embed/audio/32291/medium/”]
