Killarney councillor calls for review of reform of local government

A Killarney councillor has called for a review of the reform of local government introduced three years ago.

Town Councils were abolished and Municipal Districts were introduced, and Cllr Michael Gleeson says the system isn’t working.

The Kerry Independent Alliance councillor says the Killarney MD now takes in a considerably bigger area than the old Killarney Town Council, but doesn’t have the same powers.

As well as Killarney, the MD includes Castleisland and Rathmore and their hinterlands, and has a population of over 38,000.

Cllr Gleeson says the scrapping of the term of Mayor and replacing it with Cathaoirleach is greatly damaging to the town.
