A Kerry TD has called for new measures to improve road safety for cyclists.
Deputy John Brassil says the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, must commit to introducing new measures aimed at protecting cyclists.
Fianna Fáil will be bringing an amendment to the Road Traffic Bill in the coming weeks, to create minimum passing distances for motorists overtaking cyclists.
Deputy Brassil says many of the roads frequented by cyclists in Kerry are dangerous by their nature, and these are often narrow country backroads with frequent bends and poor visibility.
Minister Shane Ross has previously claimed minimum distances are unworkable; however, John Brassil says the introduction of such measures have had a positive impact in many countries.
