A Kerry TD is calling on the Government to immediately progress drone regulation legislation.
Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil was commenting following the recent drone sightings near UK airports which led to major disruption and huge financial losses.
He wants the Government to progress the legislation proposed by Fianna Fáil which is currently at the second stage in Dáil Éireann.
Deputy Brassil says the recent drone sightings at UK airports could have resulted in a loss of life, adding the massive disruption caused could also happen in Ireland.
The ‘Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drones) Bill 2017’ would ensure that drones are registered with the Irish Aviation Authority and that prior to use the owner must be issued with a registration certificate by the IAA.
The Kerry TD says drones can be used in many positive ways including aiding farmers monitor their crop growth and for search and rescue operations. However, he adds that in the wrong hands they are weapons.
Deputy Brassil says as drones are freely available and largely untraceable, legislation is urgently required.
