Kerry Senator believes presidential election should not go uncontested

A Kerry Senator believes next year’s presidential election should not go uncontested

Senator Ned O’Sullivan says it’s unedifying to see Taoiseach Leo Varadkar promoting the candidature of the incumbent.

Michael D. Higgins was elected President in 2011, succeeding Mary McAleese.

Senator O’Sullivan says the Presidency offers the electorate a valuable opportunity of engaging in present-day Ireland, and he would like a candidate that all the main parties could endorse.

He adds an early announcement from President Higgins would be welcome, so the contest can begin in earnest.
