Kerry rape victims forced to travel to Cork for forensic examinations.

A lack of funding for the Sexual Assault Unit at Tralee General Hospital means that victims of rape have to travel to Cork for medical examination. Since the unit opened at TGH in 2002, 30 victims of sexual assault have been treated.Vera O`Leary of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Assault Centre has pointed out that since last December, staff shortages mean that victims now have to travel to Cork for vital forensic examination. A project to train female G.P.s in forensic examination has been launched by Tralee General Hospital, but so far, up-take is low. Speaking this morning on ‘Kerry Today’, Vera O`Leary made this appeal.
