The mother of a resident at St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort has condemned the Disability Minister for stating that some relatives had ‘dumped’ family members with special needs in institutions.
Ina O’Dwyer, whose son Bernard has lived in St Mary of the Angels since 1981, wrote an open letter to Minister Finian McGrath which was published in today’s Irish Examiner.
Ms O’Dwyer objected to Minister McGrath’s position, in which he said he agreed with disability campaigners who described the placing in relatives in institutions as being akin to being ‘dumped’ out of society.
She says his words felt like a personal attack on her and she felt compelled to reply.
Ina O’Dwyer has called for more disability funding to be given to the Beaufort facility and says the policy of not admitting new residents to St Mary of the Angels needs to be changed.
The Cahersiveen woman says people with profound disabilities and their families will always need services provided by St Mary of the Angels.
