A Kerry MEP has defended his vote against a resolution to increase search-and-rescue efforts for refugees making a sea crossing.
Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly was speaking after the European Parliament rejected a resolution, which had asked member states to step up efforts to save asylum seekers crossing the Mediterranean.
All of Fine Gael’s MEPs voted against the resolution yesterday, which lost by two votes.
The Kilcummin native says he voted against the proposal due to concerns about information being leaked to people-smugglers and traffickers.
The Fine Gael MEP says, while every effort must be made to help those refugees escaping warzones, the EU must be careful with the information it gathers.
