Housing organisation serving Kerry says CPOs should be applied to vacant buildings

A housing initiative is being rolled out in Kerry to support homeless families.

Novas has introduced the Housing First Service for families in the county.

The initiative is a partnership between Kerry County Council, Novas and the private rental market which will all provide social housing.

Head of policy and communications with Novas, Una Burns, says the model offers wrap-around support for security for landlords as well as tenants.

She says they offer additional supports to landlords to entice them to take tenants they might otherwise not accept.

In total since February, 21 homeless families have been referred by Kerry County Council staying in either emergency accommodation or transitional housing.

Ms Burns says she believes Compulsory Purchase Orders should be applied to vacant buildings to help combat the current homeless crisis.
