Kerry hoteliers criticise Government’s decision not to reverse increased hospitality VAT rate

Kerry hoteliers and guesthouse operators are criticising the Government’s decision not to reverse the increased hospitality VAT rate in Budget 2020.

Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation, Bernadette Randles, says the hike from 9% to 13.5% has seriously impacted the industry.

This VAT rate is now higher here than it is in 27 European countries, which the IHF says is impacting Ireland’s international competitiveness.

Ms Randles says it’s disappointing the Government failed to recognise the challenges now confronting businesses, particularly with the uncertainty of Brexit.

She believes the Government should be looking to ensure long-term sustainable growth for the industry.
