Kerry has poor level of Garda man power in rural areas

Figures released by the Department of Justice shows Kerry has a poor level of Garda man power in rural areas. The county has a population of 129,000 but just 288 Gardai. The Sligo/Leitrim division with a population of 76,000 has 282 Gardai, this division has a population far less than Kerry, but just six Gardai stationed there. Muintir na Tire, the association for community development is criticising Garda man power levels, particularly in isolated rural areas. The organisation says rural environs especially during the winter are open to robberies on the homes of elderly people. Kerry has a ratio of 22.3 per 100,000 people, compared with Sligo/Leitrim, with 36.3, and Cork city with 30.3. On top of this Gardai in Castleisland were forced to work from a prefab while they await a new building and a new divisional headquarters, promised to the Kerry division for some time now seems to be a way down the buildings priority list.
