A Fine Gael councillor has said Minister Heather Humphreys needs to ‘seriously look’ at penalties and deterrence regarding illegal gorse fires.
Cllr Bobby O’Connell was speaking following a massive gorse fire in Ahamore Bog near Castleisland last night which raged for almost twelve hours.
Appliances from Castleisland, Tralee and Killarney were tasked to the scene at approximately half past six yesterday evening where they remained until a quarter to six this morning.
Castleisland Fire Brigade returned to the scene this morning – the fire is now under control.
Cllr O’Connell said the fire, in an area known locally as ‘The Wild Goose’ was dangerous and reckless and destroyed over 100 hectares of bogland habitat.
He said proper penalties and deterrence is necessary as these fires are becoming all too commonplace:
