Kerry County Councillor claims drones are being used to track deliveries of oil

A Kerry County Councillor claims drones are being used to track deliveries of oil.

Councillor Mike Kennelly, who was speaking at the Joint Policing Committee meeting, said a homeowner in North Kerry had €500 worth of home heating oil delivered, only for it to be stolen within days.

Councillor Kennelly claims the homeowner received a delivery of oil and, within three days, found the tank had been emptied.

He says drone activity had been reported in the area.

The Fine Gael councillor believes a drone was used to follow the delivery truck to the property.

At the JPC meeting, Councillor Kennelly asked gardaí what can be done about drones gathering intel, which is then being used to carry out criminal offences.

In response, Superintendent Dan Keane said there is currently no criminal law covering the flying of drones in Ireland and that the Irish Aviation Authority is responsible for the licensing of drones.
