Kerry County Council has no plans for staff-less libraries

Kerry County Council says there are currently no plans for operating libraries without staff in the county.

It follows a motion by Cllr Norma Moriarty who said the importance of actual librarians is far more important than automation.

The My Open Library initiative, which has been rolled out in a number of counties, allows access to libraries for registered users over 16 years of age seven days a week on a self-service basis.

Cllr Moriarty said the local authority should not allow any move towards staff-less libraries under any guise including the misleading idea that automation allows for longer opening times.

Kerry County Council says it has no plans to join the initiative but would not rule it out in future if it would prevent the receipt of grant aid.
