Kerry councillor wants the production of driving licences to be at Garda discretion

A Kerry councillor says it should be at Garda discretion when drivers are asked to produced their driving licences after being stopped for road traffic offences.

Independent councillor Dan McCarthy was responding to new proposals relating to tougher speeding laws which were brought to Cabinet today by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross.

Under these proposals, drivers will automatically get penalty points if they don’t have a licence in the car.

Councillor McCarthy doesn’t agree with this; he says people who drive more than one vehicle are afraid they will lose their licence if they are constantly moving it.
