The only way out of the housing crisis is to build social housing.
That’s the view of Kerry County Councillor Jimmy Moloney who is a member of the local authority’s Housing Strategic Policy Committee.
The Fianna Fail councillor says no social housing was built in the past nine years in Listowel.
Cllr Moloney says the Housing Assistance Payment or HAP scheme has had issues in the county where some tenants who don’t apply in time to the transfer list are deemed housed and are at the mercy of the private market.
He says the allowance given to people on HAP is also not enough to match rising rents:
