Kerry councillor says alternatives can be found to credit unions’ Death Benefit Insurance

Alternatives can be found to credit unions’ Death Benefit Insurance.

That’s according to Councillor Niall Kelleher, who says the benefit has brought comfort to bereaved families during a difficult time.

Credit unions had traditionally offered a grant in the event of a member’s death, which paid out approximately €1,000 to offset funeral and burial costs.

Rathmore Credit Union will discontinue their Death Benefit Insurance on March 1st, while Listowel Credit Union will cease their scheme a month later.

Fianna Fáil councillor Niall Kelleher says he understands credit unions have to protect themselves financially, however, he believes alternatives are available.
