Kerry councillor doesn’t predict sanction for going against party wishes

A Kerry councillor doesn’t believe he’ll be sanctioned by Fine Gael for going against party wishes.

Potential presidential candidates will come before Kerry County Council next Monday seeking support to run for the Aras.

Fine Gael councillors have been sent letters, advising those thinking of giving support to other candidates hoping to run for president, that Fine Gael is committed to supporting Michael D Higgins.

Cllr Pat McCarthy objects to Fine Gael’s actions, saying he previously went against party wishes when Dana was running for president; he says the party shouldn’t be telling members what to do.
