Kerry Co Co under department spotlight

An Bord Pleanala overturned over half the decisions of planning cases sent to them from Kerry County Council, according to a new report. The report commissioned by the Department of the Environment details the performance of Kerry County Council across a range of services. When it comes to the percentage of waste going to landfill Kerry County Council has one of the lowest in the country at 72%. This figure, when compared with neighbours Cork City Council who distribute over 97% to landfill shows Kerry is making progress in recycling.Kerry also rates well on the controversial one off housing issue – with over 2,300 applications granted last year. However the council rejected one third of all applications brought before it. One of the more interesting facts of this report is that An Bord Pleanala overturned the council`s decision in 52% of cases it dealt with upon appeal.Nationally there has been a broad welcome for the findings of the document which according to the county and city managers association provides evidence of the strong performance of local authorities.
