The chair of the Kerry branch of the Beef Plan Movement says a forum for all stakeholders – including his group – must be immediately established to discuss potential UK tariffs.
UK Environment Secretary Michael Gove told the National Farmers’ Union annual conference that the government there will apply tariffs to food imports in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Mr Gove said this would protect British farmers and the exact details of such a regime would be made clear in the coming days.
There are fears the tariffs would have a major impact on the Irish agri-food sector as the UK is its biggest market.
A spokesperson for the Minister for Agriculture says the department has a Brexit stakeholders’ forum in place for the past two-and-a-half years.
