John was born in Toureen, Ballymacelligott and went on to win the Irish Mountain Championship – run on Carrauntoohil – on 19 occasions. As well as being a star in athletics and cross country running, his greatest hour came in 1991 when he won the World Mountain Running Championship in Switzerland, the only Irishman to win this highly prestigious event.
