Independent senator seeks Kerry councillors support for changes to Seanad election system

An Independent senator says he is seeking support from Kerry councillors for a change in the way elections to the Seanad are held. Sam Locke 1 Senator Gerard Craughwell believes that Seanad candidates should declare their candidacy before any general election to the Dáil. At present, Seanad elections are held 90 days after a general election which means that defeated Dáil candidates can contest elections to the Upper House. Senator Craughwell says that he has contacted Independent Kerry councillor, Sam Locke, about his proposal. He says the close of nominations for the Seanad should coincide with the close of the nominations for the Dáil: [audio_player src=””]
