Increase in people drink driving in Kerry so far this year

There’s been an increase in the number of people drink driving in Kerry so far this year.

That’s according to the Chief Superintendent of the Kerry Garda division, Tom Myers, who was speaking at the AGM of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee.

He says 58 people have been arrested for drink driving to date in January and February; there were 43 arrests for the same period last year.

In the past weekend alone, nine people were detected for being drunk behind the wheel.

Last year, there was a 9% drop in the numbers arrested for drink driving, down to 273; of those the majority, 57%, were aged between 21 and 40 and were mainly men – Chief Superintendent Myers says this is a worrying development.
