It’s being reported that there’s an increase in the number of people in Kerry addicted to prescription drug Lyrica, some as young as 16.
That’s according to community drugs worker with the Southern Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force based at the KDYS in Listowel, Ger Lowe.
He says more people are presenting to their service seeking help for addiction to the drug Lyrica, which is prescribed for controlling seizures in epileptic patients, anxiety disorder, and pain relief.
Ger Lowe says, in his own opinion, many young people presenting with addiction problems lack resilience.
He speculates that many young people growing up during the Celtic Tiger era lacked nothing materially, but parents were often unable to spend quality time with them because of work and other commitments.
