The Independent Broadcasters of Ireland is welcoming the approval to reduce the levy payable by independent radio stations.

The reduction, which was given approval by Cabinet will see the levy charged by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland to independent radio stations reduced by up to 50%.

Chairman of the IBI John Purcell says the move will have a significant impact on local, regional and national independent radio stations.

He says the reduction of the levy is recognition of the importance of independent radio to the 2.5 million people who choose IBI radio stations on a daily basis.
