It’s hoped part of the Tralee - Fenit Greenway will be open before next summer.
The whole project is not due for completion until quarter three of next year, but the section from the Spa to Fenit will be finished sooner.
The proposed Tralee - Fenit Greenway is to be 10 kilometres in length.
It’s to run along the route of the disused Tralee-Fenit railway line, apart from one section at Bawnboy, where Kerry County Council is proposing a 700 metre diversion.
The greenway is due to be completed between July and September next year.
Speaking at the Tralee Municipal District meeting yesterday, however, senior council engineer Tom Sheehy said he’s confident the Spa to Fenit section will be finished before next summer.
He said Kerry County Council is also investigating extending the route from Cockleshell Road in Tralee to the Spa.
Three councillors, Terry O’Brien, Deirdre Ferris, and Mikey Sheehy had motions querying the greenway and whether it could open ahead of summer 2021.
Meanwhile councillors have agreed to traffic calming measures in Tralee involving the realignment of the junction at Connolly Park / Rock St, and pedestrian crossings on the Connolly Park Road and Rock St – the latter will serve the greenway.
