HIQA has published reports on unannounced inspections carried out at three other Kerry nursing homes.

On November 5th, HIQA carried out an unannounced inspection at Kilcara House Nursing Home, Duagh where there were 34 residents who gave very positive feedback.

The report said there was no designated cleaning staff at the weekends, cleaning staff were not provided with appropriate training and controlled drugs records were not maintained in line with best practice.

The nursing home says a register provider carries out cleaning during the weekend, cleaning staff have received appropriate training and medication documentation has been brought in line with best practice.

The report into an unannounced inspection on December 10th at Oaklands Nursing Home, Derry, Listowel found there has been continued improvements in the overall governance and management of the centre.

HIQA says a number of systems have been put in place to ensure the service is safe, appropriate, effective and consistently monitored.

The centre had a history of increasing levels of non-compliance; the report says the premises has been redecorated, issues relating to residents’ finances had been addressed and staffing levels had been increased.

An unannounced inspection also took place in Killarney Nursing Home, which is located on Rock Road.

The inspection, which took place in November of last year, focused on six outcomes, with the majority being compliant.

The HIQA inspector found issues identified in an earlier inspection were largely addressed; however, one remaining action related to the routine monitoring of blood sugars for residents with diabetes.
