Higher rate of third level grants in Kerry

Young people from Kerry have a much higher chance of getting third level grants than their counterparts in urban areas. Figures released to The Labour Party show that the county with a population of just over 130 thousand was awarded a total of 1 thousand 1 hundred and 90 higher education grants. Meanwhile South Dublin with a population of almost 250 thousand got just over 800 grants.Commenting on the figures Labour’s Joan Burton said that many people on modest incomes are just outside the limits for grants meaning their children are precluded from going to college by contrast there is a culture of expectation of a grant in many rural areas. Overall the figures show that there has been a slight increase in the total number of grants awarded nationwide.
