Grand-nephew of John B Keane among those killed in US balcony tragedy

One of the young students killed in the Berkeley balcony disaster in the US, was the grand-nephew of the late Listowel writer John B Keane. John B. Keane Statue, Listowel Niccolai Schuster from Dublin, lost his life along with five others after a balcony collapsed while they were attending a 21st birthday party in the Californian city. And in another Kerry link to Monday’s tragedy, it has also emerged that one of those seriously injured in the accident, Aoife Beary, is the daughter of Listowel native Mike Beary. Named among the six Irish students who lost their lives in the tragedy, was Niccolai Schuster from Dublin. His grandmother was Peg Keane Schuster, a sister of the late John B Keane, who married and settled in Dublin. Mr Schuster, who was 21, is understood to have visited his Listowel cousins on a number of occasions, and his father John attended Writers’ Week in Listowel just two weeks ago. Meanwhile 21-year-old Aoife Beary is in hospital in Berekley and is understood to have sustained serious injuries in the accident. Ms Beary, whose birthday was being celebrated on the night was on a J-One visa to the US for the summer. She was renting the apartment where the tragedy happened, along with Olivia Burke and Eimear Walsh, both of whom died in the balcony collapse. Ms Beary’s father Mike is from Listowel originally, and works as an architect in Dublin. It’s understood the young woman’s mother also has Listowel connections.
