Gardaí investigate scam where family paid deposit for Killarney holiday home that didn’t exist

Gardaí are investigating a holiday home scam where a family paid deposit for a Killarney house that didn’t exist.

This is following an incident where a family booked a property for a week’s holiday in the county.

They had paid a €400 deposit on the property, having found the accommodation listing on DoneDeal.ie.

A member of the affected family, Michelle Flynn from Co Clare, said she started to panic when she was unable to get in contact with the alleged owner.

Finbarr Garland of DoneDeal.ie says the suspect, who is not from Kerry, is known to gardaí.

He advises buyers to take extra precaution when renting properties online, including asking for the property’s Eircode.

Mr Garland also says scammers are taking advantage of buyers’ urge to secure properties.
