Gardaí are appealing to parents not to allow their teenage children to travel to Listowel to meet friends during Listowel Race Week.

They've also warned that they'll be cracking down on any large gatherings of young people during the seven-day meeting, which starts on Sunday and will be closed to the public.

The warning comes amid growing concern from the public that teenagers will congregate in large groups in the town, in breach of social distancing rules.

Sgt Diarmuid O'Brien says drinking on the streets and in other outdoor places in Listowel will be banned next week, as part of Garda efforts to curtail the spread of Coronavirus.

He says with Birds funfair not coming to town, and no live music or entertainment on the streets, there is nothing for teenagers to do in Listowel next week:
