A fundraising page for a Castlegregory man detained in Greece has exceeded its target.

24-year-old Sean Binder, who is a German citizen but grew up in Castlegregory, was arrested on the Greek island of Lesbos after several months’ service as a volunteer for an NGO assisting refugees and migrants.

He is being held on suspicion of human trafficking, money laundering, espionage and being a member of a criminal organisation.

Sean’s aunt, Maja Binder, created a Go Fund Me page to help subside accommodation and travel costs for his mother, who’s travelled to Greece.

Over 160 donations totalling €6,073 were received in the first four days.

The fundraising drive has now ceased after exceeding its initial target of €5,000.
