Units from Killarney fire service took just under three hours to battle a large gorse fire adjacent to Killarney National Park last night.
The fire broke out shortly after 7pm on an area of commonage at the foot of Mangerton mountain, in the townland of Gortagullane.
It’s believed this was the scene of serious fires in recent years, some of which have threatened the forestry of the national park.
Two units of Killarney fire service appeared to have brought the blaze under control by 9pm ,but have to return to scene when the fire sparked off a second time.
It was eventually brought under control just before midnight.
Just yesterday the Department of Agriculture issued a red alert warning of extreme fire risk to forestry because of the low humidity over Ireland and easterly airflows.
