Fire Service appeals to landowners to abide by rules

The Fire Service is appealing to landowners to abide by the rules on burning gorse. A ban came into effect yesterday and remains in place until the end of august however it appears to have been widely ignored after aircraft reported plumes of smoke over the Kerry Mountains at 20,000 feet.Air traffic control in cork and Shannon received the reports from a number of different craft. Valentia coastguard has also received reports of mountain fires from passing ships. A trawler on its way to Galway also reported seeing huge mountain fires at around 2am this morning. Michael Forrest of the fire service says gorse fires place a considerable burden on his staff.
