Festival organisers axe Golden Rose Ceremony

The organisers of this year’s Rose of Tralee are shelving the Golden Rose Ceremony. The practice of giving out complimentary tickets is also to be axed. A spokesman for the festival says they’re not in a position to award golden roses in two weeks time, but they will return as soon as possible. The new rose regime has made it clear that their targets for this month’s event will be modest given the turbulent times the festival has suffered.Eight months ago, liquidation was only avoided by cutting a deal with creditors which saw them accept 30 per cent of what they were owed. The Golden Rose has been an integral part of the event, honouring those who had made an outstanding contribution over the years. Now the organisers have decided it`s too expensive to put on, much like the practice of issuing complimentary tickets. Managing Director Anthony O`Gara says it’s one area of cost that has grown into a major area of concern. And he’s insisting that everyone involved in this year’s festival will buy their own tickets.
