Feile Bia to carry out random testing.

Food outlets in the county who display the Feile Bia logo could be subject to DNA tests. The move follows last summer’s controversy when the Irish Farmers Association claimed that some local hotels were passing off Foreign Beef as Irish produce. An angry war of words erupted in Kerry last summer when the IFA and hoteliers clashed in a major row over beef labeling. The IFA published a name and shame list claiming 4 Kerry hotels were passing off foreign beef as Irish. Hoteliers in the county reacted angrily to the list and rejected its findings. Now Feile Bia – which is essentially a Guaranteed Irish scheme – is to carry out random DNA testing of 10 per cent of the outlets taking part in the schemeChief Executive of Bord Bia Michael Duffy made the announcement at the launch of a new outdoor plaque which will be awarded to Feile Bia companies. He denied that the testing is in any way linked to last year’s controversy, saying it`s aimed at providing the fullest guarantees to customers.
