Favourite Beaten At The Curragh

Diamondsandrubies dazzled the brightest of all in the Sea The Stars Pretty Polly Stakes, the highlight of this afternoon’s final day of the Irish Derby Festival at the Curragh. Fourth in the Investec Oaks at Epsom on her latest start, Diamondsandrubies had to withstand a sideswipe from stable companion Together Forever at a crucial stage of that race. Legatissimo was agonisingly close to pulling off the 1000 Guineas – Oaks double when victory was snatched off her in the dying strides by Qualify and that Classic form saw the David Wachman-trained filly sent off at 6-4 favourite to win this ten furlong contest. Seamie Heffernan sent Diamondsandrubies into the lead at the halfway point and she asserted her authority with two furlongs left to run. However Legatissimo and Ryan Moore were bearing down on the leader and Ribbons, one of three English challengers in the field, was storming home down the wide outside and set up a thrilling finish. Diamondsandrubies just held on from Legatissimo by a short head with only a neck between her and Ribbons, ridden by Frankie Dettori in third. Diamondsandrubies gave trainer Aidan O’Brien his third winner of the race after Peeping Fawn and Misty For Me. The daughter of Fastnet Rock was bred by her owner Roisin Henry out of Quarter Moon, who Mrs Henry also bred.
