Farmers to receive up to 9,500 euro for bogland

A new deal between farming bodies, Duchas and the Department of the Environment will see farmers in the county receiving up to nine and half thousand euros for bogland. The deal which took two years to secure undertook a review of special areas of conservation allowing farmers the right to sign off their rights to bogs to duchas. Farmers will receive three thousand euro for their first acre of bog land, however if they decide to strike a deal before the end of 2005, six and a half thousand euro will be added. The IFA’s John Stack says it looks a good deal for farmers in Kerry.
