Fáilte Ireland has launched a Visitor Experience Plan for the Skellig coast of Kerry.

It aims to increase the time tourists spend in the region, by creating more visitor experiences aside from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Skellig Michael.

The area has enjoyed a massive boost in tourist numbers following the release of Star Wars: Episode VII, The Force Awakens which was filmed on Skellig Michael in 2015.
The Skellig Coast takes in Kells, Foilmore, Caherciveen, Dromid, Valentia Island, Portmagee, St Finan’s Bay, Ballinskelligs, Waterville, Caherdaniel, and Castlecove.

This Fáilte Ireland Visitor Experience Plan for the Skellig Coast intends to help create jobs and generate increased revenue in the area.

The plan also sets out to protect the special environmental character of the Skellig coast by spreading tourist activity more evenly.

The Skellig Coast Tourism Network was also formally launched today; it’s an umbrella organisation for the tourism, community, business and development groups in the Skellig coast area.

The network will co-ordinate activities with the initial aim of implementing the recommendations of the plan.
