Extra charge for electrical goods from today

Electrical retailers in Kerry are today expecting a slow-down in trade with the introduction of the new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive. The EU initiative, which is aimed at reducing the level of pollution caused by discarded white goods, will lead to an increase of up to 40 euro on all electrical items. Micheal O’Coilean of Kerry County Council welcomes the scheme but the Consumer Association’s Dermott Jewell, says it’s wrong of producers to add on these tariffs. He says charges are being added by producers to cover the cost of waste disposal and recycling.
