South Africa’s Dean Burmester and England’s Jordan Smith are the joint clubhouse leaders on the opening day of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

Both shot 5-under par opening rounds of 65.

Shane Lowry endured a torrid return to home soil, opening with a 5-over 75.

Amateur champion James Sugrue is best of the Irish at Galgorm Castle, having shot a 3-under par opening round of 67.

Next best is Damien McGrane, in the clubhouse on level par.

SOCCER

Dundalk captain Brian Gartland says they’re out to prove the doubters wrong this evening.

They’re in Moldova to play Sheriff in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

A win this evening would leave Dundalk just 90-minutes away from a group stage place.

Gartland says such an achievement would quieten a lot of criticism from outside the club.

Kick-off in Moldova is at 7.

At the same time, Tottenham kick-off away to the North Macedonian side, Shkendija

At 6, Celtic get underway away to Riga.

AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has tested positive for coronavirus and is now in self-isolation.

He was due to play for them tonight against Bodo Glimt in a Europa League qualifier.

Joy Neville says she’s extremely honoured to be involved in the upcoming autumn internationals.

The Limerick native will become the first woman to serve as TMO for a men’s international when Wales face Georgia in Llanelli

Neville will also be TMO for Scotland’s test with Fiji on November 28th.

Rob Kearney looks set for a move to Australia having bid an emotional farewell to Leinster.

The 34-year old full-back has confirmed his departure after 15-years with the province.

Kearney’s been linked with the Perth-based Super Rugby side, Western Force.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that Katie Taylor’s next world title defence will be in November.

The undisputed women’s lightweight champion is set to face W-B-O mandatory contender Miriam Gutierrez.

The Spaniard has won all 13 of her fights as a professional.

CRICKET

Former Australian international cricketer Dean Jones has died of a heart attack at the age of 59.

The batsman played 52 Tests for his country and was part of Australia’s 1989 Ashes winning squad in England.

He also went on to captain Derbyshire in county cricket.
