EU’s annual quotas to be discussed at the Council Of Fisheries

Fishermen have today begun negotiations at the Council Of Fisheries for the EU`s annual quotas. The commission intends to introduce serious reductions in the next year’s quotas of key stocks. Severe cuts of 15 per cent will be discussed in 17 of the whitefish stocks with the highest cuts proposed for cod, whiting, plaice and sole. The commission also intends to increase its days at sea restrictions which leaves boats tied up for all but 11 days a month. Lorcan O’ Cinneide from the Irish Fish Producers organization feels that such restrictions are counter productive.
