European Games Round Up

It’s been a hugely successful day for Irish boxing at the European Games in Baku, with two gold medals secured in the boxing ring. Portlaoise’s Michael O’Reilly scored one of the biggest shocks of the games as he overcame Xaybula Musalov of Ajerbaijan in the men’s middleweight. O’Reilly came out on top after a unanimous decision, to claim Ireland’s second gold of the day. Earlier, Katie Taylor won her 18th gold medal in international competitions. She had a comfortable win against France’s Estelle Mossely in the women’s lightweight division. The wins bring Ireland to third on the medal table for boxing at the games. Earlier, Chloe and Sam Magee were beaten in the badminton mixed doubles semi-finals and had to settle for bronze. In swimming, Emma Reid was the only Irish competitor to get through from this morning’s heats across all competitions. She qualified for the 50 metre butterfly semi-final but has failed to qualify for the final in the last half-hour.
