Over €24,000 on securing and maintaining vacant garda stations in Kerry last year

The OPW spent over €24,000 on securing and maintaining vacant garda stations in Kerry last year.

The Office of Public works, which owns a number of public buildings in the county, says the cost of maintaining vacant garda stations in Kerry has increased by over 55% in the past year alone.

12 stations in Kerry were closed under the Garda District and Station Rationalisation Programme in 2012 and 2013.

Four of those garda stations are still lying vacant, over six years after first closing.

Those are Ballylongford, Brosna, Camp and Moyvane.

In 2016 and 2017, over €15,000 was spent each year on security and maintenance for the four vacant stations.

This figure increased in 2018, up nearly €9,000 to €24,400.

This means over €55,400 was spent over the past three years on maintaining and securing empty garda stations in Kerry.
