Dr Tim Jackson calls for legal age for drinking and smoking to be raised

A specialist who carried out research into substance abuse among teenagers in Kerry and Cork wants to raise the legal age limit for drinking and smoking to 21. Dr Tim Jackson, a specialist in public health medicine would also like to see the price of alcohol raised to put it beyond the reach of younger teenagers. Dr Jackson’s survey showed a link between early substance abuse and dependency in later life. His research also showed that the number of 15-year-old smokers in the region had trebled since 1996, to nearly 30%.
