Diocese of Kerry contributes €158,000 to The Stewardship Fund

The Diocese of Kerry contributed over 158,000 euro to the controversial Stewardship Trust last year. The fund was set up for compensation for victims of clerical sexual abuse. Each Diocese makes a contribution to the trust. In a statement Bishop Bill Murphy claims contributions in the Kerry Diocese were not paid from weekend collections in parishes. He says the Diocesan Finance Council which is made up of Priests and lay people continues to be made up of all financial matters relating to the Diocese and matters relating to the trust. In Kerry the contributions to the trust are provided for through bequest given to the Bishop for use at his discretion, income from long standing shareholdings as well as the sale of other assets which Priests left to the diocese. The contribution is based on the number of Catholics in the diocese. Following a recent outcry about the fund a review of its operation is being undertaken by the Irish Bishop`s Conference.
