Decision deferred on lease of The Harriers Field to Bird’s Amusement

A decision on leasing The Harrier`s Field to Bird`s Amusements has been deferred pending the receipt of legal opinion. Birds are willing to lease the field for four weeks of the year co inciding with the Rose of Tralee for half a million euro. The money from the lease will allow the Athletics Club to upgrade its facility adjacent to The Town Park. However under this type of long term lease birds would have a claim on the land which is leased to harriers by the council. This claim would extend beyond the term of the harriers lease.Members of the Council appear to be in favour of Bird`s proposal but had looked for further legal opinion in the hope of closing this loophole. Town Clerk told members at this months meeting it will be a further 10 days before the opinion of Council solicitors is received. Mr Scannell has the option of calling a special meeting to debate the proposal. Alternately it will come before the May meeting for decision.
