The Daniel O’Connell Heritage Summer School is taking place this weekend in Derrynane and Caherciveen. The overall purpose of the School is to examine aspects of the historical career of Daniel O’Connell as well as to consider the challenges of modern Ireland. The Academic Director of the School is Cahersiveen-born Maurice Bric, a professor of history in UCD. The School will present these themes in five sessions which are informed by O’Connell’s own public career, Catholic Emancipation, Reform, Repeal, Leadership and Human Rights. A series of lectures will deal with the historical aspects of O’Connell’s career and their relevance for modern Ireland Today, Professor John Coolahan, a Tarbert native will speak on the topic of education, now and then, followed by a lecture on the topic Legacies. The summer school closes tomorrow with a memorial mass for the O Connell family.
