Criticism at additional charge for paying property tax in post office

Revenue has extended the deadline for payment of this year’s Local Property Tax. It follows a ‘very large’ volume of calls to a dedicated helpline, and a filing rate of nearly 8 thousand payment notifications an hour at times over the past two days. The original deadline of 8 o’clock tonight has now been pushed back to 4pm on Friday. Members of the public can contact the helpline from 8 to 8 today and tomorrow, and from 8 to 4 on Friday. The number is 1890 200 255. Revenue logo Criticism has been levelled at a one euro charge being applied to those choosing to pay the property tax in a lump sum in the Post Office. An Post says this additional cost is an administrative charge. Long delays are also being experienced on Revenue’s helpline for queries on the Local Property Tax. Revenue says the “LoCall” number is a low cost phone service and it isn’t possible to advise on call costs as this is dependent on phone networks. Additional resources have also been put in place to deal with the huge surge in calls.
